Nvidia Corp. releases the Tesla C1060 GPU Processor

Hardware maker Nvidia has announced a new computer that has the power of a cluster of computers at a small fraction of the cost.

Nvidia, working with several partners, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Western Scientific, and others, has developed the Tesla Personal Supercomputer, using the graphics processing unit based on Nvidia’s Cuda parallel computing architecture.

Burton Smith, a technical fellow at Microsoft stated while there have been claims of desktop supercomputers in the past, “this time it’s for real,”

Nvidia representiatives say computers using the Tesla C1060 GPU processor will have something like 250 times the processing power of a typical PC workstation, enabling researchers to run complicated simulations, experiments and number crunching processes without the need for a supercomputer.

This so-called "personal supercomputer" will incorporate anywhere from two to four Tesla C1060 processors, which are made up of 240 stream processing cores.

Most computer cluster will run a 100 times the cost of one of the Tesla-powered workstations. The Tesla C1060 card, available on computers Tuesday, will sell for $1,699, with desktop computer systems including the card selling for less than $9,995, said Andrew Humber, an Nvidia spokesman. The systems would run at a processing speed of four teraflops, or four trillion floating point operations per second.

"This represents phenomenal price/performance for computational researchers who have typically had to compete for time on expensive and power-hungry clusters," the Nvidia spokesperson said in an e-mail.

Several institutions, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Cambridge University, and the Max Planck Institute are already using GPU-based personal supercomputers.

“GPU based systems enable us to run life science codes in minutes rather than the hours it took earlier,” Jack Collins, manager of scientific computing and program development at SAIC-Frederick’s Advanced Biomedical Computing Center in Frederick, Maryland, said in a statement. "This exceptional speed-up has the ability to accelerate the discovery of potentially life-saving anti-cancer drugs.”

With most High-Performance Computer (HPC) clusters and supercomputers using conventional CPUs, Nvidia is betting that its general-purpose GPUs can offer the types of performance that scientists, researchers and other workers in the HPC market need now to run these types of workloads.

Using Two Monitors on One Computer Is More Efficient

Using Two Monitors on One Computer

You might question why someone would use two monitors on one pc but there is an explanation.  Known as dual pc monitors, these have a multitude.  A great reason for using two monitors is for anyone in the photography business.  For instance, individuals working on digital pictures, trying to view, analyze, and arrange, using dual monitors is a huge help.

With a dual computer screen, you can indeed double work and also desktop space.  One of the most common pc monitors is the LCD.  These are aesthetically pleasing and they are very space efficient.  Therefore, someone who does not have a lot desk space would benefit from the LCD monitor.  Now, for people trying to save money, a CRT monitor is also a great choice but bigger.

When it comes to using a dual computer monitor, again the greatest advantage is for someone in photography or an individual who works with graphics and digital images.  Some of the main benefits include:

Looking through a picture album, putting all images on one monitor in thumbnail view and then viewing the photos on a full screen on the second monitor whereby the image could be focused and manipulated.

Editing pictures is also easier by using dual computer monitors.  For instance, one monitor can be used for browsing images on the internet or through some type of photo gallery and then with the second screen, pictures can be edited using a special software program.

Even staying current on email is an advantage of having two monitors on one pc.  For home businesses or individuals in corporate America, getting tons of emails is common.  With two screens, someone could display all new emails coming in while the other could be be used for other types of tasks.

The bottom line is that dual computer monitors have many of advantages for home users or people in the workplace.  While the computer speed would not increase, productiveness would since the person is able to stay better organized and multi task in a way like never before.  This trend has become so preferred that it is becoming a normal part of purchasing a pc and screen.

Today, there are a many of pcs on the market that are engineered to support a dual computer screen without having to spend additional cash or time in getting the parts set up.  Therefore, if you have a newer computer, you might already have the capacity to work on two monitors on one computer.  To check, look at the back part of the computer where you would see two VGA connectors or DVI connectors, or in some instances, both.

If your pc is not designed with a port for working on dual computer monitors, then you can visit a local pc or electronics outlet and buy the required parts.  For this, sometimes the hardware can be installed by yourself but there are times when a professional’s help is needed.

Spyware: The Lurking Danger On Your Computer

October 6, 2008 · Filed Under News · Comment

It is not always possible to know whether or not your laptop or computer has become affected by spyware since such malicious programs are something that remain in the background and go about their business in the shadows without letting you become aware that a problem exists with your personal computer or laptop.

Be Aware

Most of us are not even aware about what damage such software can do to your system and you may also not be aware of preventive measures to help block the presence of spyware, which makes matters worse. It is therefore necessary to look a little deeper into the problem and know what spyware actually is and how you can prevent it from disrupting the proper working of your system.

Spyware are essentially computer programs that plant themselves on your computer’s hard disk and are known to come in different flavors and types, and they can also even jot down your browsing activities. These programs are able to also send such information to third parties while others will note down your keystrokes and then send sensitive information to people that should not have access to such sensitive information.

Certain types of spyware that are known as keyloggers can steal your password as well as username and provide this information to those who will take unfair advantage of that information. The internet is the most common way of getting spyware on your system–often when downloading software or other programs.

However, not all spyware is actually dangerous–it is nevertheless an unwanted risk that can do damage to your system. Therefore, it has become necessary that you learn how to protect your computer from such programs and your best bet would be to use certain specialized programs that are designed to identify and then rid your system of such unwanted intruders.

Spybot is one such computer program, which can help you keep your system free and your personal information well protected. You need to be aware of certain kinds of spyware that will try and fool you into thinking that they are actually anti-spyware programs when in fact they are not.

To fight the threat posed by spyware it would pay to look at the possibility of using spyware blockers. Of course, some spyware won’t do anything malicious though others will try and do harm. It pays to ensure that you don’t take risks and use whatever means are available to prevent your system from becoming corrupted by spyware.
